Checklist for a Version Upgrade Windchill Installation

Upgrading to a new version of Windchill requires the use of a development platform and a production platform to facilitate upgrading and testing prior to upgrading the production system.

Before proceeding with an upgrade, be certain to review the upgrade requirements outlined in the Windchill Configuration Guide.

In the lists below, the book and chapter number are indicated at the end of each sub-step in parentheses. The letter represents the specific guide, and the number represents the chapter number.

Perform the following steps to complete a version upgrade Windchill installation.

Step 1: Review the Windchill System Requirements

If you have not already done so,  1. Apply the applicable operating system patches. (I-2)
 2. Review system memory and disk space requirements. (I-2)
 3. Review your Windchill and third-party product hardware requirements. (I-2)

Phase I: Create the Upgrade Test System

Step 2: Before You Begin the Upgrade

All processing activities must be completed on the development system prior to upgrading the third-party products on the development platform.
 1. Freeze all customization activities on the development system.
 2. Complete the processing of the development system background queues.
 3. Back up the codebase and database of the development system.
 4. Stop the development system Windchill servers.

Step 3: Upgrade or Install the Third-Party Products on the Development Platform

 1. Verify that the third-party products are current with this Windchill release.
 2. Upgrade the Web browsers and Web servers. (I-3 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)
 3. Upgrade the Oracle8i Release 2 software. (I-5)
 4. Upgrade the Java Development Kit (JDK). (I-6)
 5. Upgrade the servlet engine. (I-7 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)

Step 4: Install the Windchill Products

This list represents the CD-ROM titles of your PTC products. (I-8)
 1. Install Foundation and PDM (required).
 2. Install Documentation (optional).
 3. Install Customization Factor (optional).
 4. Install Engineering Factor (optional).
 5. Install Sourcing Factor (optional).
 6. Install Product Planning Factor (optional).
 7. Install Info* Engine Server (optional).

Note: You install these optional Windchill applications either manually or with a Wizard: Universal Classification, Manufacturing Planning Factor, Info*Engine Database and Directory Adapters, and ProductView.

Step 5: Create the Oracle8i Database

 1. Create the Oracle8i database, user schema, and Windchill objects. (I-9)

Step 6: Configure the Third-Party Products

 1. Configure the Web server. (C-3 for non-AIX) (C-6 for AIX)
 2. Configure the servlet engine. (C-4 for non-AIX) (C-6 for AIX)
 3. Configure the Web server for authentication. (C-5 for non-AIX) (C-6 for AIX)

Step 7: Convert Windchill to Multi-byte Character Sets

 1. Convert to support multi-byte character sets (optional). (C-7)

Step 8: Copy the Customized Components to the Test System

 1. Integrate the Verity search engine configurations of the development system into the test system (required if Verity is installed). (C-10)
 2. Integrate the customized components of the development system into the codebase of the test system. (C-10)
 3. Execute the newly generated SQL scripts to apply the customized code enhancements to the test system database. (C-10)
 4. Load the Windchill database with test data. (C-8)
 5. Test the customized components of the test system using site-specific procedures.

Phase II: Upgrading the Development System

Step 9: Upgrade the Schema and Migrate the Data

 1. Upgrade Windchill Content Replication (optional). (C-9)
 2. Upgrade the database schema of the development system in place. (C-10)
 3. Migrate the data of the development system in place. (C-10)
 4. Start the Windchill servers on the test system. (C-10)
 5. Test the upgraded database of the development system using the codebase of the test system and site-developed procedures.

Phase III: Upgrading the Production System

Step 10: Before You Begin the Upgrade

 1. Complete the processing of the background queues on the production system. (C-10)
 2. Stop the production system Windchill servers. (C-11)
 3. Back up the codebase and database on the production system.

Step 11: Upgrade or Install the Third-Party Products

 1. Upgrade the Web browsers and Web servers. (I-3 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)
 2. Upgrade the Oracle8i Release 2 software. (I-5 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)
 3. Upgrade the Java Development Kit (JDK). (I-6 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)
 4. Upgrade the servlet engine with Java Server Page support. (I-7 for non-AIX) (I-4 for AIX)

Step 12: Copy the Test System Codebase to Production

 1. Copy the Windchill directory contents from the test system to the production system. (C-10)

Step 13: Configure the Third-Party Products

 1. Configure the Web server. (C-3 for non-AIX) (I-6 for AIX)
 2. Configure the servlet engine. (C-4 for non-AIX) (I-6 for AIX)
 3. Configure the Web server for authentication. (C-5 for non-AIX) (I-6 for AIX)

Step 14: Upgrade the Production System Schema

 1. Upgrade the database schema of the production system in place. (C-10)
 2. Migrate the data of the production system in place. (C-10)
 3. Start the Windchill servers and initiate the Windchill home page. (C-11)
 4. Perform a regression test of the upgraded production system using site-specified procedures.

Postinstallation Activities

Step 15: Create the Boostrap Files

 1. Create the bootstrap files. (C-12)

Step 16: Apply the Web Browser Upgrades

 1. Apply the Web browser upgrades on the Windchill client systems. (C-13)
